2017 Capstone Design Expo
It’s bigger than ever — and it’s almost here. The Capstone Design Expo is Friday (April 28)! If you didn’t catch Bennett Ward, Ph.D. director of Capstone Design, on WCVE's Science Matters radio show, listen here. This year, student researchers in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering have received funding from the U.S. Department of Defense for four Capstone projects and two VIP projects. In a new collaboration with the VCU School of Business, several groups of engineering and business students are learning the process of launching a new company in an entrepreneurship capstone course.

Hackathon Wins
More Hackathon Wins for
VCU Coders
VCU’s computer science students continue coding their way into hackathon glory. The Rams’ winning streak continued this month at Bitcamp, one of the region’s biggest hackathons. Held in the Xfinity Center on the University of Maryland’s College Park campus, Bitcamp attracted more than 1,000 top-notch coders. Among them were 17 programming Rams, who completed six projects and took home nearly $9,000 in prize money.

Answering a Global Call to End Hunger
(Photo: WFP Innovation Accelerator) – Spira, a startup founded by Elliot Roth (BME ’15), was among 11 finalists at a week-long boot camp at the WFP Innovation Accelerator in Munich, Germany, last week. The company beat competitors from around the world to the final stage of the Food in Emergencies: Global Impact Challenge, an international call for radical innovations in the fight to end hunger by 2030. Spira is developing a beverage that uses super-nutritious spirulina as its main ingredient.

Sternheimer Spotlight
In a collaboration between the departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, a team is developing a 3D printed shoe insole sensor array that sends foot pressure data to a smart device. The team is among the seven winners of Sternheimer Awards for their Capstone Design projects.
