Degree requirements for students entering prior to fall 2008

The computer science department has proposed major changes to the computer science curriculum effective in the fall of 2008. Students who are accepted into the program after the effective date of the new curriculum must meet the new requirements. Students accepted prior to any change in requirements may elect to graduate under the requirements in the bulletin in effect when they started in the program or under any subsequent bulletin. Students who elect to change bulletins must complete all of the requirements in the new bulletin. An exception is that students in the program prior to fall 2008 are not required to take CMSC 101, even if they choose to change their effective bulletin. However, if they choose not to complete CMSC 101, they must still complete the 45 credits in computer science required under the new curriculum.

A student who elects to remain under the old requirements and has already completed CMSC 301 can progress through the program without any effect. These students will be eligible to take CMSC 303 as one of their upper-level electives if they have not taken CMSC 521. Students remaining under the old requirements will also be allowed to substitute CMSC 451-452 for CMSC 490 and the requirement for an upper-level writing intensive course outside the major.

CMSC 301 will be offered for the last time in the fall of 2008. Students who do not complete CMSC 301 by fall 2008 will be required to take CMSC 302. They will also need to take CMSC 303, because it is an indispensable prerequisite for CMSC 403, a required course. CMSC 303 will then count as one of their upper-level electives if they choose to remain under the old requirements. Students with weak mathematical skills will benefit from choosing to wait to take CMSC 302 rather than CMSC 301, because the material will be covered at a somewhat slower pace.

Regular sections of CMSC 490 will be offered in the fall of 2008 and in the spring semester through at least 2011. After that, individual arrangements will be made for any students who began the program prior to Fall 2008 and do not choose to take CMSC 451-452.

The graduation worksheets summarize all of the graduation requirements for the University, the School of Engineering, and the Department of Computer Science, and are designed to help you and your adviser to determine when you have met all of these requirements. In completing your worksheet, it is permissible to use the same course to satisfy more than one general education requirement. However, the credits for the course count only once.
