Dear Potential Students,
Welcome to the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Engineering. Here you’ll find an accredited curriculum, an award-winning faculty, state-of-the-art research facilities and a multidisciplinary collaborative environment that is committed to helping you succeed.
Because we’re young (only 17 years old) and relatively small (1,763 students will join us this fall), we’re able to offer a different approach to your education—one that’s passionate about innovation and where each professor is available to mentor your best efforts in critical thinking. And, because we think like entrepreneurs, you’ll have opportunities to become involved in innovative projects and research during your first year.
As a VCU engineering student you may find yourself working alongside biomedical scientists in state-of-the-art laboratories next to the VCU Medical Center or with electrical and computer engineers in the Wright Virginia Microelectronics Center 1000-chip fabrication “clean room” or in the Mentor Graphics EDA lab for chip design, simulation and layout. Within the VCU da Vinci Center for Innovation, you may work with interdisciplinary student teams, sponsored by some of the world’s leading businesses, designing products that provide real-world innovations to improve human life.
At VCU, you’ll have a wide range of opportunities to identify and explore your engineering passion—all within a dynamic, urban environment. And that’s just one of the many strengths of VCU.
We have a lot to be proud of…
- A diverse student population that addresses and adapts to the needs of industry
- A cadre of pioneering industry leaders that actively recruit our students for leadership positions
- A first-of-its-kind Ph.D. in Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering
- Nearly 90 percent of our graduates either enter the workforce or continue their education in advanced studies within six months of graduation
We offer accredited degrees at the undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels in five departments with seven programs. Through our rigorous academic programs and vibrant community engagement we contribute to today’s competitive workforce, help build stronger communities and improve lives.
I am excited about the enthusiasm I see in our students and in the collaborative atmosphere that permeates the campus.
There is a great momentum here at VCU and I invite you to become a part of it.
Barbara D. Boyan, Ph.D.
